Maxing Mulch

IT is now even easier for Bendigo residents to be green.

Greenaway Bins will begin its fortnightly green garden waste kerbside collection service on May 25.

Participating residents will pay $120 per year for the service.

View Street resident Mary Boromeo was the first person to sign up for the new deal.

“I have been conscious for some time that I need to dispose of garden waste more responsibly,” Ms Boromeo said.
“This seemed the perfect solution.”

Lawn clippings, bark and mulch, small branches, prunings, leaves and flowers can be placed in the bin, which will be collected each fortnight on the same day as council’s weekly garbage collection but on the opposite week to the recycling pick up.

Collected green waste will be recycled into mulch and other environmentally friendly products, and sold back to the public by Epsom Sand & Soil and Epsom Environmental Services.

Greenaway Bins managing director Anthony Janssen said his company is hoping to reduce green waste going into the Eaglehawk Landfill by 1500 tonnes in the first six months.

City business adviser – waste, Derek Shotton said the new service was win-win.

“It reduces landfill and brings another private enterprise to the city.”

Mr Shotton said the service was not compulsory but that the city would be encouraging as many people to use it as possible.
