New waste collection gives a green option
BENDIGO residents can now move their excess mulch and lose those autumn leaves with the launch of a new green waste collection service.
Local company Greenaway Bins has launched a new fortnightly garden waste collection service providing for lawn clippings, bark, small branches and prunings.
Managing director Anthony Janssen said the the waste will be recycled locally into mulch and other environmentally-friendly products for use by local companies.
“About 26 per cent of our throw-away rubbish is green waste such as garden clippings and organics a resource that shouldn’t be going into landfill. It is estimated 11,000 tonnes of green waste is going into the Eaglehawk landfill site each year – double the state average,” he said.
“Greenaway Bins is starting a Go Green for Bendigo campaign which we hope will reduce green waste going into the Eaglehawk Landfill by 1500 tonnes in the first six months. Then we plan to keep increasing our target with the help of Bendigo residents.”
The 240-litre garden waste wheelie bins will be collected each fortnight on the same day as council’s weekly garbage collection but on the opposite week to the recycling collection. The service is cost-effective at $2.30 per week.
Greenaway Bins will provide a discount for the first 500 who sign up for the service.
One of the first people to sign up for the service was mother-of-two and local pharmacist Mary Boromeo.
“I think this is a great idea.
“I have realised for some time that I needed to find a more environmentally friendly solution for my garden waste and now Greenaway Bins have provided one,” Ms Boromeo said.
“I also like the idea that the waste will be recycled into environmentally-friendly products. I didn’t hesitate to sign up for the service.”
City of Greater Bendigo City Futures director Stan Liacos said the council’s Business and Economic Development unit had worked with Greenaway Bins to help the company establish this new service for local residents.
“Not only will this new service lessen the amount of waste going to our landfill, it will provide new employment and business opportunities in Bendigo making it a win-win for all concerned,” he said.
